Mark Chiarello, born October 31, 1960, is an American illustrator, art director, and editor whose career in comics spans from the late 1980s into the 2020s. He is best known for his atmospheric painted covers and interior work, particularly on *Batman* and *Hellboy: Seed of Destruction*, where his lush, moody colors and precise linework helped define the visual tone of Mike Mignola’s early Hellboy stories. Chiarello’s path into comics began as a colorist and artist, with early credits on *Nth Man the Ultimate Ninja* and *Judge Dredd Megazine*, and he later took on writing and inking duties. As art director for DC Comics, he oversaw the visual direction of major projects and collaborated closely with writers and artists such as Mignola, Brian Bolland, and Dave Gibbons. Among his notable co-creations is the graphic novel *Vigilante: City Lights, Prairie Justice*. After decades of work, Chiarello’s legacy rests on his ability to blend fine-art sensibilities with commercial storytelling, influencing how color and design are approached in mainstream comics. He received multiple Eisner Awards for his editorial and artistic contributions, cementing his reputation as a craftsman who elevated the medium’s visual standards.
