Frederick Schiller Faust, born May 29, 1892, in Seattle, Washington, and died May 12, 1944, in Santa Maria, Italy, is best known for his Western fiction under the pseudonym Max Brand. He also created Dr. James Kildare, a young medical intern featured in a series of pulp stories that later expanded into films, radio, television, and comics. Faust wrote under many names—including George Owen Baxter, Evan Evans, and George Challis—and as Challis penned the "Tizzo the Firebrand" swashbuckler series set in Renaissance Italy for *Argosy* magazine. His path into comics came through adaptations of his work; he is credited as a writer on 12 issues, most notably for *Four Color* and *Sheriff Klassiker*, as well as titles like *Luke Short's Six Gun Ranch* and *Max Brand's Silvertip*. His style blends rugged adventure with psychological depth, and his key collaborators were often the artists and editors who adapted his prose. The Kildare character, co-created with the pulp market in mind, became a lasting multimedia property. Faust died in World War II while serving as a war correspondent in Italy. His legacy endures through his prolific output and the enduring popularity of his Westerns and medical drama pioneer.
