Mike Dringenberg
Mike Dringenberg (born c. 1965) is an American comic book artist whose work on the early issues of DC Comics’ *Sandman* helped define the visual identity of the series. He is best known for his collaboration with writer Neil Gaiman, co-creating the character Death, whose iconic ankh and pale skin became hallmarks of the Vertigo imprint. Dringenberg’s path into comics began in the late 1980s, and he worked steadily as an artist, inker, and colorist across more than 50 issues from 1987 to 2022. His clean, expressive linework and moody, atmospheric storytelling gave *Sandman* its distinctive gothic-fantasy tone, particularly in the early arcs. Beyond *Sandman*, he contributed to titles like *Enchanter* and the *Biblioteca Sandman* collections. Dringenberg’s later career included less frequent mainstream work, but his early contributions remain influential. He has received several industry honors, including Eisner Awards for his work on *Sandman*, and his co-creation of Death is widely regarded as one of the most memorable characters in modern comics. Dringenberg’s legacy is that of a quiet craftsman whose art helped launch one of the medium’s most celebrated series.
