Addison Morton Walker was born on September 3, 1923, and passed away on January 27, 2018. An American cartoonist and writer, he built one of the most enduring careers in newspaper comics history, working across writing, art, inking, lettering, and coloring on well over a hundred published issues spanning more than seven decades.
Walker is best remembered for launching *Beetle Bailey* in 1950, a strip following the misadventures of a perpetually lazy Army private that would become a fixture of newspaper funny pages for generations. Four years later he co-created *Hi and Lois*, expanding his reach into domestic comedy and demonstrating a versatility that kept his work fresh across very different tonal registers. He occasionally signed strips under his given name, Addison, rather than Mort.
His output found particularly enthusiastic audiences in Scandinavian markets, where titles such as *Knasen*, *Flippie Flink*, and *Billy* carried his work to readers who may never have encountered the American originals.
