Nate Powell
1978–
Nate Powell, born in 1978, is an American graphic novelist and musician best known for his emotionally resonant artwork and storytelling. He first gained widespread recognition with his 2008 graphic novel *Swallow Me Whole*, which earned both an Ignatz Award and an Eisner Award for Best Original Graphic Novel. Powell’s most celebrated work, however, is the *March* trilogy, an autobiographical series co-created with U.S. Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin. As the illustrator, colorist, and letterer, Powell brought Lewis’s civil rights experiences to vivid life, and the trilogy won the 2016 National Book Award, making Powell the first cartoonist ever to receive that honor. His artistic style, characterized by expressive black-and-white linework and a keen sense of pacing, has also been featured in titles such as *Sweet Tooth*, *Black Hammer: Streets of Spiral*, and *Das Schweigen unserer Freunde*. Over a career spanning from 2002 to 2022, Powell has contributed to 21 issues across multiple series, often collaborating with writers like Jeff Lemire and Dean Haspiel. He continues to be a vital voice in independent comics, balancing his graphic novel work with his career as a musician.
