Héctor Germán Oesterheld (23 July 1919 – disappeared 1977) is revered as a foundational figure in Argentine comics, a writer whose work blended pulp adventure with sharp political conscience. Born in Buenos Aires, he began his career as a journalist before pivoting to comics in the early 1950s. As editor and primary writer for Editorial Frontera, he launched groundbreaking series like *Hora Cero Suplemento Semanal*, *Il Sergente Kirk*, and *Misterix*. His signature style fused cinematic pacing with dense, morally complex narratives, often in collaboration with artists such as Hugo Pratt and Alberto Breccia. Oesterheld co-created the iconic gaucho hero *El Eternauta* (with Francisco Solano López), a science-fiction allegory that critiqued dictatorship and imperialism. After Che Guevara’s execution, his work grew more overtly political, notably his 1968 biographical comic *Che*, which was banned and burned by the Argentine military regime. Oesterheld joined the Montoneros guerrilla movement, publishing clandestinely until his abduction and likely murder in 1977; his daughters and sons-in-law were also disappeared. Posthumously hailed as a master, his legacy endures as a moral touchstone for Latin American comics. He has received no major formal awards, but his influence on generations of artists is immeasurable.
