Paul Gravett
Paul Gravett, born in 1955 in London, is a journalist, curator, and broadcaster who has been a central figure in British comics criticism and curation since the early 1980s. He is best known for founding the influential *Escape* magazine in 1983, which championed alternative and international comics. For many years, he wrote a monthly column for *Comics International* and contributed to *ArtReview*, *The Guardian*, and *The Comics Journal*. His signature work includes curating major exhibitions and authoring books such as *Comics Art*, which surveys the medium's global history. Gravett has collaborated closely with artists like Milo Manara, editing *The Manara Library*, and has written introductions for works by Yoshihiro Tatsumi (*The Push Man and Other Stories*) and Dave McKean (*Violent Cases*). He co-created the graphic novel *SVK* with artist Dan Berry. Later in life, he continued to write, lecture, and organize events, earning the 2018 Eisner Award for Best Comics-Related Book for *Comics Art*. His legacy lies in elevating comics scholarship and bringing international works—particularly from Japan and Europe—to English-speaking audiences.
