Paul Kirchner
1952–
Paul Kirchner, born January 29, 1952, is an American writer and illustrator whose career has spanned comic strips, toy design, advertising, and editorial art. He is best known for his surreal, meticulously detailed work in *Heavy Metal Magazine*—particularly the wordless, dreamlike strip *The Bus*—and for his long-running contributions to *High Times Magazine*. Kirchner’s path into comics began in the 1970s, and he quickly developed a distinctive style: precise linework, deadpan humor, and a fascination with the absurd logic of everyday life. His key collaborators included publisher and editor Sean Kelly, with whom he created the *Instant Quaker Oatmeal Presents* series. Among his notable co-creations is the graphic novel *Murder by Remote Control*, a noir-tinged psychological thriller. Later in his career, Kirchner continued to produce work for European markets, including *Zona 84* and *Scary Tales*, and his art appeared in gallery exhibitions. While he received no major industry awards, his influence is felt in the cross-pollination of underground comix and mainstream illustration. He remains active, with credits spanning 1975 through 2021.
