Phiny Dick
1912–1990
Phiny Dick, born Afine Kornélie Dik on 14 September 1912, was a Dutch illustrator and writer best known for her work in children's books and comics. She was born in the Netherlands and died on 7 August 1990. Dick entered the comics field through her marriage to Marten Toonder in 1935, a partnership that lasted until her death. Her most recognized creation is the character Olle Kapoen, which she both wrote and drew, and she is credited as artist and inker on 16 issues of that series, all from 1948. Her style combined gentle humor with clear, expressive linework, appealing to young readers. While she collaborated closely with her husband, her own voice as a storyteller and artist stood out in her solo work. Dick’s legacy lies in her contributions to Dutch children’s literature and comics, particularly in the post-war period. She received no major awards noted in available records, but her work remains a fondly remembered part of the Dutch comic tradition.
