Ryu Fujisaki
b. 1971
Ryu Fujisaki was born in 1971 in Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. He entered the manga industry after winning prizes in both the 39th and 40th Tezuka Awards, making his professional debut in 1990 with the one-shot *WORLDS*. All of his work has been published by Shueisha under their Shōnen Jump labels.
Fujisaki is best known for creating *Hoshin Engi*, a fantasy epic based on Chinese mythology that ran from 1996 to 2000. The series was adapted into an anime in 1999 and again in 2018, along with radio dramas and video games. He also adapted Fuyumi Ono’s horror novel *Shiki* into a manga, which itself received an anime adaptation. More recently, he has been working on a manga adaptation of the *Legend of the Galactic Heroes* novels. His series *Hōshin Engi* and *Wāqwāq* were released in English by Viz Media.
Beyond his serialized work, Fujisaki has illustrated four light novels and released two comprehensive art books. His style is marked by dynamic action and detailed character designs, often blending historical or mythological elements with modern storytelling. He collaborated closely with editors and writers at Shueisha throughout his career. His contributions to manga have been recognized through his Tezuka Award wins, and his works continue to reach international audiences through translations and adaptations.
