Sandy Carruthers
Sandy Carruthers is a Canadian comic book artist best known as the first illustrator of the original *Men in Black* comic book series, and as the creator of the webcomic *Canadiana: The New Spirit of Canada*. Born in Canada, he entered the industry in the late 1980s, with his earliest credited work appearing in 1989. Over a career spanning roughly 25 years, he contributed as an artist, inker, letterer, and writer across 19 issues. His most notable projects include *The Men In Black Book II*, *Alien Nation: The Public Enemy*, *Shattered Earth*, *Headless Horseman*, and *The New Original Captain Canuck Limited Edition* ashcan, as well as *The New Humans*. Carruthers’ style is characterized by clean, expressive linework, often suited to science fiction and adventure stories. While he worked with various collaborators on these titles, his most enduring contribution remains his early visual work on *Men in Black*, which helped define the look of the franchise before its film adaptation. Later in his career, he turned to digital publishing with *Canadiana*, a webcomic that explores Canadian identity and folklore. Though he never received major industry awards, his work has been recognized by fans of independent and Canadian comics. Sandy Carruthers passed away on an unspecified date, leaving behind a modest but influential body of work.
