Scott Chantler
1972–
Scott Chantler, born February 9, 1972, is a Canadian cartoonist and illustrator recognized for his work in both historical graphic novels and children’s fantasy. He entered the comics field in the mid-1990s, building a reputation for clean, expressive linework and a strong sense of period detail. Over his career, he contributed as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on a range of titles, including *Hawaiian Dick: Screaming Black Thunder*, *Northwest Passage*, and *Stephen Colbert’s Tek Jansen*. He is perhaps best known for his graphic novel *Two Generals*, a deeply researched account of two Canadian soldiers in World War II, which showcased his ability to blend personal narrative with historical accuracy. Chantler also co-created the fantasy series *Northwest Passage*, collaborating with writer Jay Odjick, and worked on *Bettie Page: The Princess and the Pin-Up*. His later work shifted toward all-ages fantasy with the *Three Thieves* series, earning him a devoted readership among younger audiences. Chantler’s contributions have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Canadian Cartoonist. His legacy lies in his versatility—moving fluidly between sober history and playful adventure—while maintaining a disciplined, storytelling-first approach that has influenced a generation of Canadian comic artists.
