Sergio Macedo
Sergio Macedo, born 8 April 1951 in Além Paraíba, Brazil, is a comic artist whose work bridges South American storytelling with European science fiction and ethnography. He began his career in advertising and journalism, illustrating for Brazilian newspapers and magazines before relocating to France in the 1970s. There, he found a natural home in the pages of *Métal Hurlant* and its American counterpart *Heavy Metal*, where his detailed, atmospheric style contributed to the adult-oriented science-fiction and fantasy anthologies of the era.
Macedo later settled in French Polynesia, a move that profoundly shaped his artistic voice. His subsequent comics often center on the indigenous peoples of the region, blending anthropological observation with speculative fiction. He also explored alien encounters and esoteric themes, giving his work a distinctive, meditative quality. His most credited titles include *Schwermetall*, *Caraïbe*, *Karibis*, and several issues of *Heavy Metal Magazine* and *Métal Hurlant*, spanning a period of active publication from 1976 to 1984.
While not a household name, Macedo remains a respected figure among connoisseurs of European and Brazilian comics for his singular fusion of cultural documentation and cosmic wonder. His legacy endures in the quiet, immersive worlds he created, far from the mainstream.
