Stephen Bissette
Stephen Bissette, born March 14, 1955, is an American comic book artist and publisher best known for his visceral horror work. He earned his reputation in the 1980s on DC Comics' *Swamp Thing*, where he collaborated with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben. Their run redefined the character and the horror genre in mainstream comics. Bissette's style—detailed, moody, and organic—gave the series a tactile, unsettling quality that matched Moore's ambitious scripts. Beyond *Swamp Thing*, he co-created the series *1963* and the graphic novel *Freaks' Amour*, both showcasing his affinity for dark, subversive storytelling. He also worked as a colorist and writer across 32 issues from 1979 to 2019. Later in his career, Bissette became a respected publisher and educator, teaching at the Center for Cartoon Studies. His contributions to horror comics have been recognized with multiple awards, including Eisner and Harvey honors. Bissette remains a significant figure in the evolution of mature, literary horror in American comics.
