Stephen Crane was an American author whose work, though created in the late 19th century, was adapted extensively for comic books in the 20th, particularly through the *Classics Illustrated* series. Born on November 1, 1871, in Newark, New Jersey, he was the ninth surviving child of Methodist parents. He began writing at age four and had articles published by sixteen, leaving Syracuse University in 1891 to work as a reporter. His first novel, the 1893 Bowery tale *Maggie: A Girl of the Streets*, is considered the first work of American literary Naturalism. He won international acclaim for his Civil War novel *The Red Badge of Courage* (1895), a masterpiece of vivid intensity and psychological realism. Crane also endured a public scandal in 1896 after testifying in the trial of an acquaintance, Dora Clark. Later that year, while waiting to travel to Cuba as a war correspondent, he met Cora Taylor, who became his lifelong partner. Their vessel sank off the Florida coast, leaving him adrift for 30 hours—an ordeal he recounted in "The Open Boat." He covered conflicts in Greece, with Cora recognized as the first woman war correspondent, and later lived in England, befriending Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells. Plagued by debt and tuberculosis, Crane died on June 5, 1900, in a Black Forest sanatorium in Germany at age 28. Nearly forgotten for two decades, his work was revived by critics; his writing—characterized by dialects, irony, and themes of fear and social isolation—deeply influenced 20th-century authors. In comics, his stories appeared in *Classics Illustrated* and related international editions, credited on 19 issues from 1951 onward.
