Steve Whitaker
1955–2008
Steve Whitaker (26 June 1955 – 22 February 2008) was a British artist and colourist, best remembered for his nuanced colour work on the collected edition of *V for Vendetta*. Born in England, he brought a painterly sensitivity to comics, earning praise from *V for Vendetta* artist David Lloyd as one of Britain’s finest colourists and a gifted teacher. Whitaker’s career in comics spanned 1986 to 1996, during which he contributed to over 50 issues as artist, colourist, or inker. His credits include *WildThing*, *Super Soldiers*, *Black Axe*, *Tank Girl: Apocalypse*, *Death’s Head II*, and *Codename: Genetix*. He was also a scholar of the medium and a longtime instructor at The London Cartoon Centre, where he worked alongside Lloyd. Though his output was concentrated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, his influence extended through his teaching and his meticulous approach to colour, which elevated the mood and texture of the stories he touched. Whitaker’s legacy endures in the quiet authority of his craft, and his work remains a benchmark for thoughtful comic-book colouring.
