Steven Moffat
Steven William Moffat was born on 18 November 1961 in Paisley, Scotland. A lifelong devotee of *Doctor Who*, he first broke into television writing with the teen drama *Press Gang*, followed by sitcoms *Joking Apart* and *Chalk*, the latter inspired by his own stint as an English teacher. His early-2000s sitcom *Coupling* drew from his relationship with producer Sue Vertue. Moffat contributed six celebrated episodes to the revived *Doctor Who* from 2005 to 2008, winning three Hugo Awards and a BAFTA Craft Award. He succeeded Russell T Davies as showrunner and head writer from 2010 to 2017, guiding the series through its fifth through tenth series and earning another Hugo. Alongside Mark Gatiss, he co-created the BBC crime drama *Sherlock* (2010–2017), which brought him two Primetime Emmys and a BAFTA Craft Award. In the 2020s, he wrote the miniseries *Dracula*, *Inside Man*, *The Time Traveler's Wife*, and the comedy-drama *Douglas Is Cancelled*, and returned to *Doctor Who* for two episodes in 2024. Appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2015, Moffat is known for his sharp dialogue, intricate plotting, and deep affection for genre storytelling.
