Tardi

Jacques Tardi, born 30 August 1946 in France, is a French comic artist widely known simply as Tardi. He entered the field after studying at the École des Beaux-Arts and the École des Arts Décoratifs, eventually finding his voice in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His breakthrough came with the series *Adèle Blanc-Sec*, a fantastical adventure set in early 20th-century Paris, which showcased his meticulous linework and darkly whimsical storytelling. Tardi is also celebrated for his gritty, realistic war comics, particularly *C'était la guerre des tranchées*, and for his collaborations with writer Jean-Patrick Manchette on works like *Griffu* and *Le petit bleu de la côte ouest*. His signature style blends precise, detailed illustration with a somber, often satirical tone, and he frequently works as both writer and artist. Among his notable co-creations is *Ici Même*, a surreal tale of a man trapped in his own home, drawn from a script by Manchette. Tardi's later career has seen continued exploration of historical and political themes, and he has received major honors including the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême in 1985 and the Angoulême International Comics Festival's Fauve d'Or for lifetime achievement in 2013. His influence endures through his uncompromising vision and his ability to merge pulp adventure with profound social commentary.
