Tom Bierbaum
Tom Bierbaum, born in 1956 in the United States, is best known as half of the husband-and-wife writing team that revitalized DC Comics' *Legion of Super-Heroes* during the late 1980s and 1990s. Alongside his wife Mary Bierbaum, he helped steer the sprawling, time-spanning saga of the 30th-century teen superheroes through a period of ambitious, character-driven storytelling. The pair’s work on the main *Legion of Super-Heroes* title and its companion series *Legionnaires* defined the team for a generation, introducing complex political intrigue and deepening the personalities of its vast cast. Tom also contributed as a writer and artist on the offbeat DC series *The Heckler* and the fantasy epic *StormQuest*, as well as the series *Star*. His key collaborators included artists such as Keith Giffen, with whom he co-created the *Legion*’s “Five Years Later” era, and writer/artist Al Gordon. Though the Bierbaums’ run on the Legion remains their most celebrated achievement, Tom’s later career saw him move away from mainstream comics. He has not received major industry awards, but his work on the Legion is regarded as a defining chapter in the team’s history, influencing later writers and solidifying the Bierbaums’ legacy as thoughtful architects of one of DC’s most beloved franchises.
