Will Gould
1911–1984
Will Gould (1911–1984) was an American cartoonist best remembered for creating the hard-boiled newspaper strip *Red Barry*. Launched on March 19, 1934, by King Features Syndicate, the strip followed the adventures of a two-fisted undercover cop and was one of several introduced to rival Chester Gould’s *Dick Tracy* (the two were not related). Comics historian Rick Marschall later praised *Red Barry* as “one of the most individualistic strips of all time.” Gould handled art, writing, and lettering on the feature, and his work appeared in numerous collected editions, including Italian reprint series such as *Collana Grandi Avventure - Bob Star* and *Albi Edizioni a fascicoli*. His style was distinctive for its moody, expressive linework and cinematic storytelling. Later in life, Gould’s strip was revived in archival collections like *Nemo: The Classic Comics Library* and *Will Gould’s Red Barry*. He remained active in comics through the late 1980s, with credits on 37 issues across various titles. Gould passed away in 1984.
