Winslow Mortimer
James Winslow "Win" Mortimer was born on May 1, 1919, in Canada, and died on January 11, 1998. He is best remembered as one of the principal artists to draw the DC Comics superhero Superman, bringing a clean, dynamic line to the Man of Steel during the 1960s and 1970s. Mortimer’s path into comics began after service in World War II; he studied at the Art Students League in New York and broke into the industry through comic book work, eventually landing at DC where he became a reliable Superman artist. His style was straightforward and energetic, well-suited to both superhero action and the lighter tone of titles he later worked on. He collaborated with writers such as Cary Bates and Elliot S! Maggin on Superman stories, and his inking helped define the look of the character for a generation. Beyond DC, Mortimer drew for Marvel Comics on *Spidey Super Stories* and *Night Nurse*, for Gold Key on *Battle of the Planets*, and for other publishers on humor and horror titles like *Spoof* and *Monsters Unleashed*. He was inducted into the Canadian comic creators Joe Shuster Hall of Fame in 2006, recognizing his lasting contribution to the field. Mortimer’s legacy is that of a skilled journeyman who helped keep one of the world’s most famous superheroes visually consistent and engaging.
