Yslaire
Bernard Hislaire, born 11 January 1957 in Belgium, is a comics artist and writer best known for his atmospheric, emotionally charged historical series *Sambre*. He began his career under the pseudonym Sylaire before settling on Yslaire, the name under which he has produced his most celebrated work. His breakthrough came with *Sambre*, a tragic love story set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, which he co-created with writer Yann. The series is noted for its brooding, painterly style and deep psychological intensity, qualities that define Yslaire's signature approach. He also created *Le ciel au-dessus de Bruxelles* and contributed to *Il cielo sopra il Louvre*, blending historical events with intimate, often dark human dramas. Yslaire works as both artist and colorist, giving his pages a distinctive, moody palette. Later in his career, he expanded into writing, handling both script and art on several projects. His work has earned him recognition in the European comics community, though he remains less known to English-language audiences. Yslaire continues to be active, with credits spanning from 1986 into the 2020s, maintaining a reputation for meticulous, visually rich storytelling that explores memory, history, and obsession.
