Yukito Kishiro
b. 1967
Yukito Kishiro, born in Tokyo in 1967 and raised in Chiba, is a Japanese manga artist best known for the cyberpunk saga *Battle Angel Alita*. His teenage fascination with mecha anime like *Armored Trooper Votoms* and *Mobile Suit Gundam*, particularly the character designs of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, along with the storytelling of Rumiko Takahashi, shaped his artistic path. He debuted at age 17 with *Space Oddity* in *Weekly Shonen Sunday*. Kishiro's signature style blends intricate mechanical detail with fluid, expressive action, often exploring themes of identity and humanity in a dystopian future. He is the sole creator of *Battle Angel Alita*, writing and illustrating the original series, its sequel *Last Order*, and the ongoing *Mars Chronicle*, as well as the side story *Ashen Victor*. His work has been adapted into an OVA and a major film. Kishiro's later career saw him continue the Alita universe, with his credits spanning from 1994 to 2019. While he has not received major industry awards, his influence on cyberpunk manga and his dedicated global fanbase cement his legacy as a singular voice in the medium.
