Street & Smith's New York Weekly

· June 10, 1878

This front page depicts a street scene of theft or pickpocketing—a well-dressed man and woman, observed by street characters, enact a moment of crime and detection. Such sensational images sold millions of copies weekly to working-class readers hungry for melodrama, crime, and moral transgression. These penny serials, appearing in newspapers and pamphlets, serialized lurid tales of urban vice, aristocratic villainy, and romantic peril across dozens of installments. Street & Smith and competitors flooded Victorian cities with cheap fiction that scandalized genteel society while establishing the narrative techniques—visual drama, cliffhanger pacing, stock characters—that would later define comic books. The genre's conventions of spectacle and serialization remain embedded in comics today.
