The Flag of Our Union

· Saturday, June 24, 1854

This penny dreadful serialized Hugger of Mankin: The Grandee's Plot, a story of colonial intrigue and crime. Sold for a few pence to working-class readers, such publications offered sensational melodrama featuring murder, betrayal, and exotic settings—staples that kept audiences hungry for weekly installments. The ornate title treatment and densely packed columns of type were typical of the era's cheap serials, which preceded and established many conventions of modern comics: episodic storytelling, illustrated covers, cliffhangers, and an appetite for adventure and transgression among ordinary readers. These pulp narratives democratized fiction and shaped popular narrative forms for generations.
