Penny Dreadfuls

The Weekly Novelette

· Saturday, October 1, 1859

A mounted woman in classical dress is rescued from a rearing horse by a man with a sword, while armed figures on horseback converge from both sides—a scene of violent rescue that exemplifies the penny dreadful's appetite for melodramatic action. Published at four cents, these serialized stories arrived weekly in working-class homes, offering sensational tales of crime, passion, and supernatural terror. Illustrated with crude but dynamic engravings, penny dreadfuls thrived on plots of seduction, betrayal, and swashbuckling adventure drawn from literature and legend. Though dismissed by middle-class critics as corrupting trash, these publications created a mass market for serialized fiction and visual narrative—the direct ancestor of modern comic books and graphic storytelling.
