Thrilling Adventures Among the Indians, compiled by John Frost, L.L.D. (Philadelphia: J. W. Bradley, 1850), presents a collection of narratives documenting conflicts between colonists and Native Americans from the colonial period through the recent Indian hostilities in Mexico and Texas. The volume contains approximately seventy accounts, including eyewitness testimonies and historical records. Featured narratives include the captivity of Mrs. Frances Scott of Virginia (1785), wherein Indians attack her family home, killing her children; the adventures of Captain Isaac Steward regarding California gold mines; border warfare incidents in Pennsylvania; and conflicts with various tribes including Lipan, Comanche, Sioux, and Pawnee. Later sections recount the Massacre at Taos and death of Governor Bent, Carson's Indian adventures, and historical figures including Tecumseh and the Prophet of the Alleghany. The collection emphasizes displays of courage, warfare tactics, and character traits among both settlers and Indians. Illustrated with engravings by W. Croome and other artists.
