The Argosy

This volume of The Argosy (July–December 1874), edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains the serialized novel "In the Dead of Night" illustrated by Arthur Hopkins, alongside poetry and short fiction. The main serial, running through chapter XXXIX, follows Lionel Bering, who has escaped from prison after conviction for murder and now hides in Cumberland under an assumed identity. General St. George, Lionel's uncle, learns of the escape while convalescing in France and eventually meets with Tom Bristow, who reveals the full story and proposes a scheme to uncover the true murderer. The volume also features the "Johnny Ludlow Papers" series of short stories, including "Hester Reed's Pills" and "Abel Crew," alongside miscellaneous fiction, verse, and essays by contributors including Margaret Howitt, Henry Kingsley, and Anne Beale.
