Beadle's Dime Novels No. 159: Snow Bird, the Trapper's Child

Β· September 15, 1868

This Beadle & Company dime novel, #159, contains "Snow Bird: The Trapper's Child," serialized by Edward Willett. Set in early St. Louis, the story begins with Jeannette Barteau being summoned from Madame Pinette's fashionable boarding-school by an unknown father who abandoned her as a child. The rough fur-trapper Jean Barteau, dressed uncomfortably in city clothes, reveals he financed her education as investment. He demands she marry wealthy James Musson to support him in his old age. Jeannette, who has secretly pledged herself to Henri Labardie, a poor but handsome fur-house clerk, refuses Barteau's demand despite his threats. The issue also includes the adventure serial "The Swamp Rifles" by C. Dunning Clark, depicting frontier action with pistol violence. The magazine is illustrated with action scenes.
