# Content Description
This issue features two serials set in North American frontier settings. "The Young Spy: Nick Whiffles Among the Modocs" by Captain J. F. C. Adams depicts the title character and Oregon Sol pursuing the Modoc chief Captain Jack, who has abducted an army officer's wife and daughter. The narrative involves a Blackfoot Indian spy, a dog named Calamity, and various frontier figures including trappers and English travelers.
The second serial, "The Lone Chief: The Trappers of the Saskatchewan" by Jos. E. Badger Jr., opens with four American trappers—Old Kit (Christopher Duncan), Yankee Sam (Samuel Grimes), and younger men Fred Mitchell and Alfred Hall—intervening in a chase near the frozen Saskatchewan River. They ambush Cree warriors pursuing a lone Indian, enabling his escape. After killing several pursuers, they discover their fugitive is an Indian who becomes suspicious of their motives, nearly shooting one trapper before understanding they saved him from his enemies.
