This issue opens with "The Flying Yankee," a naval romance serialized in Beadle's dime novel format. The narrative follows Lieutenant Alden Ainslie's return to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, aboard the armed brig Vulture after two years at sea—bringing home the body of Captain Horace Duncan, who died in a duel in Havana. Ainslie and midshipman Bernard recount to Commodore Cutting how Lieutenant Noel Moncrief fatally challenged and killed Duncan over disputed conduct. Moncrief surrendered and now returns in irons.

The story then shifts to Moncrief Manor, an elegant stone mansion near Portsmouth. Governor Moncrief's elder son Noel, now a naval officer, arrives home after five years away and encounters Eve Eldred, a beautiful seventeen-year-old ward of his father, singing by lamplight. Their flirtation begins immediately, with Noel entranced by her appearance and voice. Eve reveals herself as Governor Moncrief's ward while Noel introduces himself as the returning son.
