The Young Privateer; The Pirate's Stronghold

Β· January 6, 1880

This issue of Beadle's Half Dime Library (No. 128, January 6, 1880) features "The Young Privateer: The Pirate's Stronghold" by Harry Cavendish. The narrative follows a young midshipman's departure from port aboard the privateer ship The Arrow during the American Revolutionary War. After an emotionally charged farewell to his hometown, the protagonist joins fellow midshipmen including the experienced and convivial O'Hara. The story then shifts to a violent maritime encounter: during a severe hurricane, The Arrow nearly collides with a merchant brig. Despite evasive maneuvering, the vessels collide, severely damaging the brig. As the damaged ship begins sinking with female passengers aboard, the crew of The Arrow faces the tragic impossibility of rescue in the raging storm.
