"Deadwood Dick's Double: The Ghost of Gorgon's Gulch," authored by Edward L. Wheeler, serialized in Beadle and Adams's dime novel weekly (1879). This frontier settlement narrative follows colonist Judson Elliott and his party—including his daughter Ethel and suitor Alf Montague—traveling west from Virginia to establish a settlement at advertised "Wild-Cat City." Upon arrival at Gorgon's Gulch, they discover the promised village exists only as a crude cabin casino operated by Bill Myers and a Chinese cook. Learning that the gunfighter Deadwood Dick has claimed the valley, Elliott refuses to abandon his purchased land. A representative, Chris Carleton, arrives from Dick's organization to warn the colonists away, initiating conflict over territorial control.
