The Mountain Detective; or, The Bully of Trigger Bar

· May 8, 1883

This 1883 Beadle and Adams dime novel installment features "The Mountain Detective; or, The Bully of Trigger Bar" by T.C. Harbaugh. The serial follows Kit Keene, a blue-eyed young detective of feminine appearance and demeanor, who has sworn an oath to track down the "Lasso League"—outlaws responsible for past suffering—and deliver them to California justice. Meeting the rough mountaineer Dandy Dash in the Shasta region, Kit learns of Trigger Bar, a lawless mining camp notorious for violence. In the second chapter, residents of Trigger Bar wager heavily on whether Moonshine's trained panther, Santa, can leap over a pyramid of whisky barrels stacked higher than ever before. The panther successfully clears the structure, winning Moonshine's substantial bet.
