Set in 1880s southern Colorado, this frontier romance opens at Villa Voselle, the estate of General Gleason, a wealthy ex-Confederate cattle rancher. Learning that his daughter Lenore has been secretly meeting Little Quick-Shot—a young scout who recently rescued her from abducting cowboys—the general grows furious, especially since he has arranged for her to marry Colonel McIntosh, a wealthy but physically diminished widower. General Gleason hopes to access the colonel's fortune. After dismissing his servant Pedro, Gleason travels to the mining town of Daggersville seeking Quick-Shot. He finds the scout—described as medium-height, handsome, and notably dressed in elaborate scarlet buckskin with golden bead-work—and confronts him angrily at the Cinnamon Bear Hotel, insulting him as a social climber and mongrel.
