Β· November 23, 1886

This issue contains a serial romance titled "Nevada Ned, the Revolver Ranger" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The opening chapters establish Ned Oliver's origins: a twelve-year-old boy in rural Pennsylvania who receives a brutal whipping from his schoolmaster rather than allow a disabled classmate to be punished. When he subsequently trips the teacher to prevent further abuse, he believes he has killed him and flees westward. After a three-week journey on foot with his dog Turk, Ned reaches his uncle John Oliver's ranch in Nevada, discovering the schoolmaster survived. His uncle employs him as a teamster on a wagon train traversing the frontier. During this journey through Indian country and wilderness terrain, Ned apprentices under Spitfire Pete, the elderly guide and hunter, learning frontier skills through rifle marksmanship and trail-reading abilities.
