Five Points Phil's Big Skirmish

This serial installment, authored by Jo O'Pie Pierce of the New York Detective Force, introduces "Doctor Chippewa Holdsworth," a self-styled Indian physician recently arrived in New York from the West. Holdsworth attends wealthy hypochondriac Daniel Beckwith, extracting substantial fees for herbal remedies derived from purported prairie plants. Beckwith's honest sailor brother, "Foretop Tom," suspects fraud and confronts Holdsworth in the household hall, threatening to keep him away from the patient. Holdsworth counters with legal threats, eventually gaining access to Beckwith's chamber. The doctor then manipulates the invalid against his brother, planning Foretop Tom's removal. Meanwhile, a boy observing the North River pier witnesses a mysterious nighttime boat departure, suggesting emerging intrigue involving clandestine activity on the waterfront.
