This issue of Beadle and Adams' pulp weekly (July 17, 1888) features "Dodger Dick's Stop Game" by T. C. Harbaugh, continuing the adventures of the young New York detective. The serial opens with Dodger Dick summoned to the office of broker Massena Branson, who seeks to locate a mixed-race Malay known as Captain Asgeelo—a wiry, powerful man with a distinctive crescent scar behind his right ear. Branson suspects Asgeelo frequents the Malay quarters near Baxter Street. Dick accepts the commission and immediately infiltrates Nicholas De La Cruze's seamen's boarding-house, a multilingual haven for Malays and mixed-race sailors. There he observes a suspicious seafaring man matching Asgeelo's description, who vanishes through a back door. Meanwhile, Branson receives a cryptic letter at his residence that causes him to faint. Dick begins questioning the proprietor about a man called "Captain Mingo"—possibly Asgeelo's alias.
