# Museum Catalog Note

The Mystery of the Island by John W. Osborn, a Western adventure serial from this June 1889 issue, features the Prairie Invincibles—ten young miners led by brothers David "Little Lightning" Kane and Kent, who operate the Little Lightning Lode silver mine in Nevada's Snake Range. The opening presents a double wedding celebration in Yellow Dust between David and Rachel Carson, Kent and Millie Orndare. The narrative intersperses two concurrent plot threads: an attack on the isolated mine by the criminal "Brotherhood of Fortune" under Captain Marks over disputed claim rights; and simultaneous coordinated violence in Yellow Dust, where an assassin shoots the camp marshal during wedding festivities. The story combines mine-camp conflict with mystery elements surrounding the attackers' true motives and organizational structure, establishing a broader conspiracy unfolding across frontier locations.
