# "The Deadwood Desperado's Last Innings" by John W. Osbon

This frontier serial follows Plucky Paul, a seventeen-year-old boy prospector in the Black Hills, and his guardian Uncle Bill Blaze. While prospecting, Paul discovers a pocket of gold nuggets but refuses to share under their partnership agreement since Bill was resting. Bill threatens to leave for Deadwood, but a suspicious newcomer arrives—"Solid Sammy," who claims to be fleeing Indians and Captain Panther-Head's raids. Bill stations Paul as a sentry while he confers with Sammy inside their cabin. Paul overhears that Sammy is actually White Wolf, a desperado seeking help for fifty dollars to smuggle a young woman away from her Eastern camping party in the hills. The woman is the object of infatuation for the Honorable Madison Morrell, who has enlisted Sammy's aid in a "brace game" against her traveling companion lover from Denver. The narrative breaks off as the scheme is being revealed.
