Bristol), a crime investigator renowned for pursuing criminals to justice, is summoned by lawyers Samuel and Daniel Kincarth to investigate the murder of Phoebe Roylan, an eighty-year-old woman fatally stabbed in her San Francisco home. Though circumstantial evidence—a night watchman's testimony, bloodstains on his sleeve, a missing knife—points to Howard Crandford, the victim's young grandnephew, the lawyers believe him innocent. Dick agrees to investigate, visiting Crandford in jail. The case hinges on disputed inheritance arrangements and a contested will between the sisters, with Crandford alternately favored and opposed by different family members.
