This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel series (No. 261, 1880) contains the opening of "Old Lute, the Indian-Fighter," by Edward W. Archer. The narrative follows Rodney Drew, a well-bred young mining prospector recovering from fever in the Pike's Peak region during the 1859 Colorado gold rush. Drew ventures alone into the hills seeking untapped gold deposits. After spotting a promising mountain crag, he encounters a grizzly bear, which he wounds but fails to kill. The narrative then shifts to two miners working a rich gold deposit in a mountain stream, discussing their exceptional haul.
