# Silent Shot, the Slayer; or, The Secret Chamber of the Hunter's Lodge

By Oll Coomes, this dime novel follows Silent Shot, a skilled frontier scout renowned among settlers for eliminating Indian threats using bow and arrow. The narrative opens with Silent Shot observing from a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near the Iowa-Nebraska border. He discovers a secret rendezvous between a young Indian woman named Summer Cloud and an Indian chief named Okalealah, revealed to be her husband. When Silent Shot's canoe is swept away during an approaching storm and he becomes trapped on a river island, he finds himself surrounded by hostile savages. Unable to escape by water due to rough conditions and blocked from landing by armed Indians on both shores, Silent Shot takes shelter in a hollow log to wait out the storm, recognizing the rising waters threaten the island's submersion.
