Ray anxiously awaits a confrontation with the mysterious Victor Bramont, who holds some dark power over him from their shared past. Instead, the disgraced officer Philip De Vin arrives bearing an arrest warrant and a diamond ring—which Osalind recognizes as her lost lover Franz Edouin's betrothal gift, suggesting he is dead or false. De Vin, a rejected suitor for Osalind's hand, uses his influence with the Commune authorities to arrest Ray on fabricated charges. After a brief struggle and gunshot, Ray surrenders before soldiers, leaving Osalind vulnerable to De Vin's schemes.
