The Dead Square Sport's Double

Β· July 1898

"The Dead-Square Sport's Double: Dare Deverell's Life Hustle," by Joseph E. Badger Jr., is a Western adventure serial. Dare Deverell, a sport from Paradise Park, discovers a leather pocketbook filled with gold double-eagles on a remote stage trail. When he bends to retrieve it, an unknown assailant ambushes him, striking him unconscious and binding him with a sack over his head. The masked attacker, employing threats and a revolver, forces Deverell into immobility, then steals his clothing and horse. The Unknown then impersonates Deverell, riding to intercept a stagecoach traveling from Uppercrust to Paradise Park. Donning a black mask, the disguised criminal stages a holdup of the coach, commanding the driver and passengers to surrender valuables and raise their hands.
