This serialized melodrama "Jule, the Jewess; or, The Miser Millionaire" by Dr. Noel Dunbar appeared in La Nouvelle (M. J. Ivers & Co., 1883). The prologue establishes core conflicts through two scenes: at a university, aristocratic student Harold Lynde attacks Jewish student Adolph Hugo on a footbridge; charity student Merton Wilbur rescues Hugo from drowning, then defeats Lynde in combat when he draws a knife. The second scene shifts to a ship wreck on the New England coast, where an unnamed young man saves a woman and seizes a life-raft, shooting two seamen who resist. The rescued woman is Isabel Lynde, Harold's sister. Upon learning her identity, the young man—revealed to be Jewish—refuses friendship, declaring "you are a Christian, I, a Jew." The narrative continues with a chapter introducing Andrew Lynde, Isabel's wealthy millionaire father, described in his luxurious mansion study as a man of anxious temperament despite his refined surroundings.
