The New York Dime Library

· July 1899

This July 1899 issue features "The Chase of Leviathan; or, The Ocean Hunters," a serial adventure by Captain Mayne Reid. The narrative opens with an unnamed narrator's six-month expedition through Louisiana searching for flamingoes. Meeting Captain Macy of the Revenue Service, the narrator gains access to flamingo breeding grounds near Barataria Island (associated with pirate Lafitte). After observing the birds—identified as the orange-hued Phoenicopterus Chilensis—the narrator becomes fascinated by Macy's own whaling adventures. The serial then shifts to Macy's first-person account: orphaned at sixteen with a deceased naval officer father, he rebels against his mother's insistence he pursue law, runs away to New York, and encounters a whaling captain recruiting for the Flying Cloud. Macy accepts the position as a "blubber-hunter"—a whaler. The narrative combines natural history description with adventure romance across maritime and frontier settings.
