This dime novel serializes the life story of Major Sam S. Hall, "Buckskin Sam," a legendary Texas Ranger. The opening chapter depicts a bull-fight exhibition in San Antonio, Mexico, arranged to entertain the city's mixed population of Mexicans, Castilians, and American adventurers. The arena features safety mechanisms including rope escapes and concealed holes for matadores. Buckskin Sam attends with fellow Rangers and impresses spectators with an exhibition of marksmanship, shooting a weather-vane repeatedly. During the climactic fight with a black bull, the animal kills the mounted manager's horse and gores a matadore. Mariana Coyen, a local "Fandango queen," rushes to aid the dying fighter. Buckskin Sam leaps into the arena to protect both the woman and the wounded man, drawing his revolver to confront the maddened bull as the crowd cries his name.
