# The Sea Slipper: The Amateur Freebooters
By Prof. J. H. Ingraham. This serial adventure opens with a fleet of vessels entering Long Island Sound in autumn. A beautiful clipper-built schooner races ahead of a brigantine through a narrow, rocky passage. Aboard the brig are an elderly gentleman, a young lady, and a Harvard student with aristocratic features. The schooner, flying a flag with a white slipper emblem, dares to cross the brig's bow—a maneuver that nearly causes collision. Its young captain boards the brig and charms the lady with courtly manner. Claiming to be "noblemen of fortune" with "the wide sea" as their fortune, he requests private words with the brig's captain regarding a matter "worth thirty thousand dollars." Below deck, he orders the steward to open the rum-hatch, revealing apparent intentions beyond mere social courtesy.
