Alabama Joe; or, The Yazoo Man-Hunters

· February 2, 1881

Alabama Joe; or, The Yazoo Man-Hunters," by Jos. E. Badger Jr., is a frontier adventure tale serialized in this February 1881 issue of the Adams Publishers weekly. The narrative follows Zenas Dawson, a lost traveler traversing the treacherous Big Black Swamp between the Chitta-Loosa and Yazoo rivers. When Dawson's horse breaks through deceptive crusted ground into viscous quickmire, he becomes trapped to his armpits, slowly sinking. A mysterious swamp dweller—"Alabama Joe"—singing a popular minstrel tune discovers him. Joe rescues Dawson using a trailing vine, pulling him to solid ground while warning against struggling. The story depicts the dangerous swamp environment populated with alligators, water moccasins, and treacherous mud, establishing a survival narrative dependent on backwoods cunning and timely intervention.
